William Shakespeare died on 23rd April 1616 in Stratford-upon-Avon, aged 52. Exactly 400 years later, the Helsinki Chamber Choir performs powerful choral settings of some of the Bard’s texts, including Alex Freeman’s newly-commissioned A Wilderness of Sea and the first Finnish performance of one of the last works by the English mystic John Tavener (who died in 2013), as well as classics by Frank Martin and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Hans Werner Henze would have turned 90 this year, and guitar virtuoso Otto Tolonen pays tribute with selections from the German master’s First Sonata on Shakespearean Characters, written forty years ago in 1975-76.
