Matthew Whittall | The return of light (world premiere) |
Cherubini | Messe solennelle in G Major |
The Helsinki Chamber Choir celebrates its 10th anniversary on the eve of All Saints’ Day, with Matthew Whittall’s new work taking the first sunrise after the Arctic winter darkness as its subject. Luigi Cherubini, a Florentine composer who was active in France and whom none less than Ludwig van Beethoven considered the greatest of his contemporaries, composed his G major Mass for a coronation that never took place. A performance in 1987 was in all likelihood the world premiere. Combining influences from Haydn and Italian opera, the Mass is a rare gem and will probably be receiving its first ever performance in Finland.
