THE PAST AUTUMN has seen a series of milestones for the Helsinki Chamber Choir, including extensive tours and international acclaim for our new CD of music by Beat Furrer. We also hosted an international festival of professional choirs in August 2016 – a first for Finland.
The 100th anniversary celebrations of Finnish independence in 2017 are omnipresent. I hope that the occasion will provide an opportunity to think about the meaning of nationalism and patriotism in a deeply interconnected world that faces global challenges. We will make our own contribution by reviving Sampo Haapamäki’s thoughtful work Maailmamaa (Global Country), as well as surveying the choral music of the Grand Duchy of Finland (1809-1917). In collaboration with the Sibelius Academy, we will present works by the younger generation of Finnish composers, while our biennial outing to Musica nova Helsinki allows us to explore the different spaces of the Kiasma museum with music by György Ligeti and three young composers. And in April 2017, BIS records will release our two-disc survey of the choral music of Erik Bergman, six years in the making.
We look forward to welcoming you to our concerts!
