Einojuhani Rautavaara was one of the leading choral music composers of recent years and his setting of the Orthodox All-Night Vigil in Finnish is dedicated to St John the Baptist. No instruments are permitted in the Orthodox Church and so Rautavaara uses the choir in a very skilful and varied way. Colours are also added by the microtonal recitations of the tenor soloist and the extreme basso profundo -solo.

In collaboration with: Festival Musiq’3

The lines of each section of the choir were straight and clear, as if played by instruments, and yet soft and flexible, supporting an unbroken sense of breathing. Each group sang with pure intonation and the resonance between the voices took on a life of its own, so that the whole space was filled with ringing colours.
