Nils Schweckendiek, conductor

Written for the chapel of Louis XIV, the grands motets formed a central part of the musical life of Europe’s most dazzling court. With all the splendour and theatre afforded by soloists, two choirs and large orchestral forces, Jean-Baptiste Lully evoked emotions from deepest sorrow to unbounded joy for a powerful monarch.

The lines of each section of the choir were straight and clear, as if played by instruments, and yet soft and flexible, supporting an unbroken sense of breathing. Each group sang with pure intonation and the resonance between the voices took on a life of its own, so that the whole space was filled with ringing colours.
