Ralph Vaughan Williams
Songs of Travel (1901–1904)

The American composer Dominick Argento composed his song cycle Letters from Composers in 1968. The texts are from letters written by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Giacomo Puccini, amongst others. Far from home, composers report culture shocks, feelings of being an outsider, and homesickness to their friends and loved ones.

The main character in Vaughan Williams’ song cycle Songs of Travel is a resolute traveller for whom memories of home and his loved ones are never far away as he walks through nature. Composed in the early years of the 20th century, the cycle continues the German Lied tradition in a British vein.

The lines of each section of the choir were straight and clear, as if played by instruments, and yet soft and flexible, supporting an unbroken sense of breathing. Each group sang with pure intonation and the resonance between the voices took on a life of its own, so that the whole space was filled with ringing colours.
