Helsinki Chamber Choir, conductor Aapo Häkkinen
Markku Mäkinen, organ

A concert of sacred music rounds of a season dominated by secular works.  The Helsinki Chamber Choir is delighted to welcome renowned Baroque musician Aapo Häkkinen to perform Sweelinck’s unjustly neglected, colourful setting of Psalm 148 as well as Monteverdi’s dramatic setting of the mass.  Jyrki Linjama has written a large-scale new sacred work, Laudes, the first book of which receives its premiere tonight.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Keyboard Fantasia

Vous tous les habitans des cieux
Claudio Monteverdi: Adoramus te

Domine, ne in furore tuo
Jyrki Linjama: Laudes Book 1 (HKK commission, world premiere)
Claudio Monteverdi: Mass (published 1650)

The lines of each section of the choir were straight and clear, as if played by instruments, and yet soft and flexible, supporting an unbroken sense of breathing. Each group sang with pure intonation and the resonance between the voices took on a life of its own, so that the whole space was filled with ringing colours.
